Texas’ prominence as the nation’s energy capital has created deep industry roots across the entire state. Over the years, Lubbock’s energy industry has concentrated in fields of research specific to our own High Plains environment – wind, water, and soil – with Texas Tech University leading the way. Today, we have one of the strongest wind energy research teams in the country, as well as a rapidly growing fuel cell cluster.
- Established in 1970, Texas Tech’s Wind Science and Engineering Research Center (WISE) aspires to the useful qualities of wind and to mitigate its detrimental effects. WISE houses 25 faculty associates, 7 academic departments, 8 professional staff, and 40 graduate students.
- The Department of Plant and Soil Science at Texas Tech University provides education and research in the production of food, fiber, turfgrass, and ornamentals while providing stewardship of the soil, water, and other environmental resources of the State of Texas. The Department plays a major role in applied research needed to support the $4.5 billion agricultural industry of the southern Great Plains.
