The advanced security industry’s broad applications range from surveillance and monitoring to biometrics, data protection, and building security. In the past decade, this industry has steadily grown in Lubbock. Together with Texas Tech University, the community has invested in educational and R&D programs to support advanced security companies. Our location plays a part as well – we are close enough to major markets like Dallas and Phoenix to give companies easy access to remote data centers, while we are far enough away to be out of the range of security threats.
Lubbock's committment to Advanced Security is unparalleled:
- Lubbock’s 3,000-acre Reese Technology Center has more than 1 million square feet of space available for security firms and other technology businesses at reduced real estate prices. The former Air Force base was transformed into a technology center in 1995 by a collaboration between Texas Tech University, the City of Lubbock, County of Lubbock, South Plains College, and the South Plains Association of Governments. Reese offers tenants access to its High Performance Computing Center with a Cray II system and state-of-the-art wireless and high-speed fiber optic Internet connectivity.
- The Center for Biodefense at Texas Tech University was established in 2002 as a response to the nation’s growing needs in the field of security. The Center is an interdisciplinary collaboration in the field of biodefense, combining the disciplines of law, public policy, mass communications, political science, microbiology, medicine, forensic pathology, animal and food science and plant science.
