Lubbock has earned the moniker of the Hub City for many reasons, not least of which for its position as an educational hub for West Texas. Three universities and one junior college have a presence in Lubbock. Now with about 28,000 students, Texas Tech University is the largest and most influential university in town. More than 70% of the Lubbock Independent School District graduates pursue education beyond their high school degrees. In Lubbock, there are a wide variety of choices beyond the prominence of Texas Tech. Five Colleges and Universities offer accredited degrees and advanced education courses. Although based in Levelland, South Plains College, a two-year institution, also has a strong presence in Lubbock with offices at the Reese Technology Center and the Byron Martin Advanced Technology Center. In addition, South Plains College and Texas Tech also partner in the Gateway Program to help students who do not qualify academically at Texas Tech. Students begin their college career at SPC. By meeting certain requirements, participants are guaranteed admission to Tech. With “all bases covered”: community commitment, options, and assistance – it is no wonder that Lubbock can boast:
